Rosa Abyssinica

Abyssinica, Abyssinica
The only rose in the Highlands
The Captain sings of Edelweiss
But he’s gone to Switzerland
We’re going nowhere, Abyssinica
I think I’ve forgotten her face
As the months wear on and on and on
It’s feeling like home in this place

How have you kept yourself delicate?
You won’t last long without rain
I will stay here with you, Abyssinica
And share in your beautiful pain

Have you been taken for granted
No, that’s just dust in my eyes
I give to others unselfishly
They think I’m crafty and sly
You should be glad you’re a rose
Soon, you will wither away
But I must remain here, Abyssinica
My brother needs someone to hate

Calls me a thief, though I’m honest
Still accepts my charity
S’pose that he thinks we’ll live forever
I died in ’73

Do you cry, Abyssinica?
Some people never have cried
Sentiment makes them uncomfortable
I’ll never understand why
No, no, it’s nothing just nausea
From all the poison I take
So much for reciprocation
See what a mess I can make?

When you die, I will die with you
I dream of blowing away
It’s not so bad, Abyssinica
Except all that money I paid

I don’t want sympathy, but company
Some faith in the common man
To have some good reason to wake up
I should have remained an Ethiopian
I thought if I picked up the tab
I could hold some in my hand
If I had the means I would end it, Abyssinica
Bury me in the Highlands

Abyssinica, Abyssinica
Your bloom’s the color of snow
If I never make it out of this cell
Long may you blossom and grow
